So many young people today believe it is old fashioned to “Honour your father and your mother”.
Many young people publicly defy their parents, and get angry when their parents order them to do one thing or another. Every youth must understand that the command to “honour your parents” comes from God, and he did attach a blessing to those who obey: “That it may be well with you and you may endure a long time on the earth.” (Eph. 6:2,3). So the stakes are high. Let’s consider what honouring your parents really means.
The word “Honour” means to recognize and respect a duly constituted authority. Just as we have political leaders and we recognize and respect their authority whether they are good or bad. So also, God has given our parents certain authority in the family. It therefore means that you must acknowledge their God-given authority to make rules for you. It is true; other parents may be more lenient than yours. You must also understand that the best of parents can sometimes be arbitrary, even unfair. Pro. 7:1,2 said: “My son, keep my commandment and continue living,” More so, your parents’ rules are usually intended for your good and it reveal their genuine love and concern for you.
Accepting correction is also part of honouring your parents. You must not sulk or throw tantrums when you are being corrected. Pro.15:5 says, only a fool “disrespects the discipline of his father”.
Lastly, honouring your parents means much more than just showing formal respect or begrudging obedience. The Original Greek describes the verb “Honour” to mean to consider someone as of great value. Your parents should therefore be viewed as precious, highly esteemed, and dear to you. And that is who they are.
